PTI has two important videos that will inspire you to take advantage of big data!

“Technology is truly turning science fiction into science fact.” This view from Futurist Gerd Leonhard is one that the port and terminal industry should take on board and run with, as Leonhard has warned that humanity will change more in the next 20 years than in the previous 300 years.

Watch Leonhard explain the key points from his new book 'Technology vs Humanity' below and then view how the industry could explore new business models through digitalisation in the recently released video by DNV GL, an international certification body and classification society, which has created a new marine industry data platform.

Knut Ørbeck-Nilssen, CEO DNV GL – Maritime, says that, as a classification society, it is vital that the organisation is “always be exploring ways we can help our industry to leverage new technologies to improve the safety and productivity of their assets”.

“Today that means being out in front of digitalisation and the vast amount of data being produced and gathered on vessels by advanced sensor technology and interconnected systems. Our industry data platform Veracity will enable connections between multiple stakeholders and data sets, thereby creating new and innovative solutions. This will give us a platform where our customers can integrate their data, quality assure the data, secure it, and offer controlled access to DNV GL or other providers to run analytics on the data. Individual data sets can be enriched with other, industry wide data sets, providing benchmarks, new and richer insights and analytics.”

Exciting times certainly lie ahead of us if the industry acts upon the Leonhard's concepts and other technological developments like that of DNV GL continue to take off!
