Fire breaks out on containership in Taiwan Strait

Container ship Zhong Zhou Chang Hong has caught fire in the Taiwan Strait, with no reports of casualties.

A fire erupted in the China-flagged vessel’s engine room in the evening 4 September.

The ship was en route from Qinzhou to Rizhao, situated on the coastline along the Yellow Sea.

China’s Ministry of Transport’s East Sea unit despatched two helicopters and two firefighting vessels. All 19 crew members were evacuated and put to safety.

Rescuers were reportedly challenged by Typhoon Hinnamnor, one of the strongest typhoons this year set to hit South Korea this week.

Asian shipping and logistics have already been impacted by the super typhoon, as Busan port has halted operations in anticipation of the storm.
