VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland and partners have begun a three-year collaboration with Oulu Port to improve secure situational awareness in important cyber-physical systems.
VTT and Oulu Port are partnering with 20 other groups, including technology suppliers and institutions, to strengthen port security and resilience.
The overall cost of the global research and development initiative is reportedly €12.8 million ($13.2 million).
The project is supported by the participating organisations, foreign governmental research funding agencies, and Business Finland; to provide a safe situational awareness paradigm that increases trust and security by including autonomous resilience into the system.
This helps to ensure that the port can recover from events and reduces the danger of different digital and physical attacks.

Juhani Latvakoski, Principal Scientist and Project Lead from VTT, said: “Ensuring digital trust and security for the protection of critical cyber-physical systems, along with fostering situational awareness, appears to be an effective way to build resilience.
2The port serves as an excellent testing ground, mirroring a miniature society with its diverse and complex operations.”
