Port of Oakland secures distinguished budget award
The Port of Oakland has received the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award from the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) for its Fiscal Year 2026 budget.

This accolade is the highest recognition in governmental budgeting, reflecting the port’s dedication to transparency, accountability, and financial excellence.

The award recognises budgets that effectively serve as public policy documents, financial plans, operational guides, and communication tools.

Port Chief Financial Officer Julie Lam said, “This award is a testament to the hard work, expertise and dedication of our finance team and staff across the port. It highlights our commitment to ensuring the budget guides operations while remaining clear and transparent for the public, community, and stakeholders.”

Operating independently from the city’s general fund, the port contributes through payments for city services and tax generation.

Its balanced Fiscal Year 2026 budget totals nearly $698 million, comparable to that of a mid-sized city.

Approximately 62 per cent of revenues come from core businesses: aviation (50 per cent), maritime shipping (39 per cent), commercial real estate (4 per cent), and utilities (7 per cent).

Planned expenditures include $297 million for operations and $243 million for capital improvements such as terminal upgrades, clean energy projects, and utility works.

Over a third of capital funding comes from state and federal grants, supporting growth and sustainability efforts.

The GFOA’s Budget Awards Program includes more than 1,900 participants across North America. The Port of Oakland is proud to be recognised among the leaders in government budgeting best practices.

In September, the Port of Oakland handled 178,942 TEUs, marking a 6.6 per cent year-on-year (YoY) decline and a 7 per cent drop from August.
