Experts assesses IMO's life cycle GHG intensity of marine fuels

Independent experts have announced they are conducting a scientific and technical assessment of the application of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Guidelines on the life cycle GHG Intensity of marine fuels.

The experts are reportedly meeting under the auspices of the Joint Group of Experts on the Scientific Aspects of Marine Environmental Protection (GESAMP), which formed the new Working Group on Life Cycle GHG Intensity of Marine Fuels (GESAMP-LCA) in response to a recommendation from the IMO’s Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC).

This effort will assist MEPC in further refining the IMO LCA framework.

The inaugural meeting of the new GESAMP Working Group was conducted at IMO Headquarters (10-13 September). The Group’s report will be submitted to MEPC 83 in April 2025, following peer assessment by GESAMP.

The Working Group’s first meeting focused on the methodological improvement of emission quantification in the IMO LCA Guidelines, sustainability themes and elements, and methodological certification criteria.

According to IMO, the GESAMP-LCA Working Group comprises individuals from Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada, China, Finland, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

In July, a green shipping conference in Belize City, Belize boosted the IMO’s work to support Caribbean countries in decarbonising their maritime sector
