EXMAR, Seapeak announce order for two ammonia gas vessels

EXMAR and Seapeak, through their joint venture (EXMAR LPG BV), have announced that they are going forward with the use of ammonia as fuel for two Midsize Gas Carriers (MGC).

The vessels will be built at the Hyundai Mipo Dockyard in South Korea.

These will be the first oceangoing ships powered by dual-fuel ammonia engines, allowing for near-zero emissions when operating on ammonia.

Wärtsilä Gas Solutions will provide the fuel delivery system, while WinGD will supply the engines.

The 46,000 cubic-metre (m³) MGCs are expected to be delivered early 2026. During the design and development phase of the vessels, operational safety is top priority.

In December 2024, Wärtsilä Gas Solutions, part of technology group Wärtsilä, provided cargo handling systems for three new 93,000 cubic-metre (m3) Very Large Ammonia Carriers (VLAC).
