10-year accord signed with auto giant
Ennore Port Ltd. (EPL), Chennai, and Ford India Private Ltd. have signed a 10-year agreement for the export of Ford cars through Ennore Port.
India’s union minister for shipping Shri G.K. Vasan said that the accord is a part of series of initiatives by the UPA government to attract further investment in the country’s port and automobile sectors.
The agreement includes the proviso for various volume based discounts on wharfage fees by EPL of up to 30 percent to encourage more exports through Ennore Port.
In the last few years, Chennai has emerged as a hub for the automobile manufacturing sector with a host of major international players having their manufacturing plants in the city. For example, Ford India has set up a modern integrated manufacturing facility at Maraimalai Nagar, near Chennai.
Between September 2010 and December 2013 around 449,720 automobile units were exported from Ennore Port, including cars manufactured by Nissan, Ford & Ashok Leyland in Chennai, Toyota in Bangalore and Honda in Delhi.
