Maritime Transport has launched a new rail freight service connecting DP World Southampton with its Strategic Rail Freight Interchange (SRFI) at SEGRO Logistics Park Northampton.
The first train, Maritime Intermodal Six, arrived on 16 June, marking the first commercial freight use of the reinstated East West Rail section between Oxford and Bletchley.
Operated by DB Cargo UK, the service runs five days a week, carrying up to 68 TEU per train.
It provides a direct inland link to one of the UK’s busiest ports and is supported by Network Rail’s Track Access Discount Scheme, which waives access charges for six months to encourage modal shift to rail.
The new route enhances east-west connectivity across central England, offering a sustainable alternative to congested north-south road corridors and supporting regional economic growth.

John Bailey, Managing Director – Intermodal, Maritime Transport, said: “This is a key step in expanding UK rail freight capacity, offering a direct, low-carbon link from Southampton to the logistics heartland. It shows how infrastructure and private investment can build a more sustainable supply chain.”
Roger Neary, Chief Sales Officer, DB Cargo UK, added: “This inaugural flow into Northampton Gateway not only increases freight capacity but does so sustainably, using new infrastructure and vital funding support from Network Rail.”
The launch forms part of Maritime’s wider expansion programme, which includes new services from DP World London Gateway and the Port of Felixstowe.
