DP World has completed a $400 million extension project at the Port of Callao in Peru, increasing container handling capacity at the South Terminal by 80 per cent.
The Bicentennial Pier enlargement project expands the pier from 650 to 1,050 metres, making Callao one of the few ports in South America that can accommodate three vessels (or two mega-vessels) simultaneously.
The project boosts handling capacity from 1.5 million TEU per year to 2.7 million TEU, and the container yard area has been enlarged to 40 hectares.
Given its closeness to Lima and the expansion of adjacent Jorge Chávez Airport, the development has the potential to raise the Port of Callao to a regional logistics hub.
