DNV GL has announced the opening of an artificial intelligence (AI) research centre in Shanghai, China, which is expected to support the development of enhanced inspection services.
The move to establish a new facility recognizes China’s position as a leader in the field of AI and extends DNV GL’s relationship with the economic giant, according to a statement.
In addition to this, the proximity of the innovation centre to companies at the forefront of AI-based technologies will allow DNV GL to collaborate effectively with a range of new partners.

Upon the opening of the research hub, DNV GL aims to build new solutions based on AI such as ‘computer vision’, which will enable a computer to carry out tasks that require a high level of visual recognition.
Another feature of the risk management firm’s strategy is to create future assurance schemes for the complex algorithms associated with AI, ensuring that the technology is implemented safely.

DNV GL has made further moves recently to utilize disruptive technologies and optimize its operations, launching a first set of remote surveys to carry out inspections on board vessels using cameras.
Blockchain has also become more important to the company’s future vision, enabling its customers to track goods as they travel along the supply chain.
