Dalian the exception as Chinese ports see double-digit growth

The eight major ports in China saw their collective TEU throughput increase by 35% year-on-year (YoY) in February 2021 as the country continued to recover from the worst effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to the Ningbo Shipping Exchange, seven of China’s eight major ports saw double-digit YoY increases. The Port of Dalian was the only exception and experienced a collapse of 42.9% in TEU traffic.

The biggest jump in February was seen at the Port of Shenzhen, where traffic rose by 73.6%. The ports of Ningbo/Zhoushan and Shanghai increased by 50% and 48.3% respectively and Tianjin did by 34.1%.

The ports or Xiamen, Guangzhou and Qingdao saw traffic rise by 26.6%, 23.5% and 14.1% YoY respectively.

Similarly, with January-February traffic, the Port of Dalian was the only one of China’s eight biggest ports to decline – its traffic plummeted by 54.2% YoY. Once again, the Port of Shenzhen enjoyed the best YoY growth, rising by 37.4%.

The ports of Ningbo/Zhoushan and Shanghai were the second and third best performers with YoY growth of 27.9% and 26.2% respectively.

Guangzhou rose by 21.2%, Tianjin by 20.2% and Xiamen by 16.6% as seven of the eight once again registered double-digit growth.

The figures are consistent with previous announcements that suggest the country’s maritime sector is recovering strongly from the COVID-19 pandemic, with the exception of the Port of Dalian, which has seen monthly double-digit declines since the beginning of the pandemic.

The growth is largely driven by the recovery in the US consumer market, which has also caused severe congestion at ports on the West Coast and in the Pacific.
