The Container Terminal Automation Conference (CTAC) 2019 will see automation leaders face the toughest questions on automation in terminals, and be tasked with a mandate to articulate why automation is still the key, despite mixed results.

The session is entitled “Leaders Make Your Case: Why Automation is Still the Key” and is an open forum for concerns to be addressed and automation experts to respond to criticisms, facilitating discussion and creating a better understanding of what increased levels of automation could mean.

Speakers presenting as part of this session include:

  • Yvo Saanen, Commercial Director and Founder of The TBA Group
  • Rich Ceci, Senior Vice President Technology and Projects, Virginia International Terminals
  • Antti Kaunonen, President, Kalmar Automation Solutions, Kalmar

Dr Yvo Saanen, who recently discussed the topic of automation with PTI in a series of video interviews, will moderate the session, bringing his own wealth of expertise from working in the ports and terminals sector for over 20 years.

While some operators have invested in automation and not achieved the results they expected, Rich Ceci’s work with Virginia International Terminals – leading a project to introduce smarter operations with the support of automation – has proven that the technology can have massive benefits.

Rich Ceci and Oscar Pernia discuss automated intelligence and its importance for the future in a recent Port Technology technical paper

Antti Kaunonen, an expert in the field of automation for one of the cargo-handling sector’s leading companies, will also be in London on May 7 to give his perspective on how container terminals can leverage automation to deliver performance.

A feature of Port Technology’s past conferences that will once again be a part of #CTAC19 is the interactive nature of each session, and the ability to ask questions and engage with each of the speakers will be especially important here.

The session is set to conclude with a Q&A that will allow attendees to pose their questions and queries to each of the speakers, driving the conversation on automation and creating an ecosystem for collaboration between individuals, businesses and other industry stakeholders.
