CSSC unveils first 27,500 TEU LNG containership

China State Shipbuilding Corporation’s (CSSC) Shanghai Ship Research and Design Institute has obtained preliminary permission for a 27,500 TEU LNG dual-fuel containership.

This massive vessel, Green Sealion 27500, sets a new world record for TEU capacity and was revealed on 3 September at the SMM Hamburg Maritime Exhibition and obtained its Approval in Principle (AiP) certificate from the DNV classification society.

The ship reportedly increases cargo capacity but has a highly optimised hull shape for increased fuel economy. Due to its connectivity with shore power sources, the Green Sealion 27500 can operate with zero emissions while moored.

In addition to the 27,500 TEU containership, CSSC unveiled a number of other vessel designs:

  • The Green Sealion 20000: a 20,000 TEU ammonia dual-fuel containership.

  • The Green Sealion 16000: 16,000 TEU LNG dual-fuel containership built with increased energy efficiency and a wide-body construction to maximise cargo room while minimising environmental effects.

  • Two modern liquefied gas carriers: a 103,000 cubic metre Very Large Ethane Carrier (VLEC) and a 93,000 cubic metre Very Large Ammonia Carrier (VLAC), both designed to transport LPG, ethane, and ammonia using cutting-edge propulsion and energy-saving technology.

In August, PIL placed an order for five new container vessels with a capacity of 13,000 TEU and dual-fuel engines powered by LNG.
