COSCO Shipping Lines (COSCO), the third largest container shipping line in the world by market share, will retrofit ten container ships with environmentally friendly scrubber systems as part of its efforts to cut back on its emissions output.
The state-owned carrier has chosen Finnish energy technologies supplier Valmet to provide the scrubbers. According to a statement, it will include a tailor-made open loop scrubber system for main engine and generator engines, including auxiliary systems and automation.

Scrubber systems are one of several solutions being pursued by the maritime industry as it prepares for the introduction of the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) rules on sulfur emission in 2020.

In an open loop mode, the exhaust gas is washed with seawater and emission and continuously monitored and the ones that will be included in COSCO’s fleet will have their emissions monitored and controlled by Valmet’s marine automation.
Speaking about the deal, Shijie Wang, Senior Sales Manager, Pulp and Energy business line, Marine Scrubber Systems, Valmet, said: “The deliveries are good examples of Valmet’s capability to create a tailor-made concept to the customer.
“Thanks to our solution, the scrubber systems can be installed to a single-island container vessel without losing any cargo capacity.
“Seamless co-operation within Valmet and with our global supply network made very short delivery times possible.
“The systems are installed before the upcoming International Maritime Organisation (IMO) sulfur cap and they will enable the use of higher sulfur oil, which is cheaper compared to using lower sulfur oil.”
