Containerships, a provider of eco-friendly logistics solutions, has announced the signing of a collaboration agreement to increase the amount of LNG-fuelled trucks in the Netherlands.

The partnership, with Dutch company Don Trucking, guarantees trucking capacity of 15 new LNG-fuelled trucks, which will be part of Containerships’ land operations at the Port of Rotterdam.

Containerships’ investments in LNG-based technology currently total US$ 226.3 million and include four newbuild LNG-powered container vessels.

In addition to this, Containerships opened its own LNG-refuelling station in the UK in 2017.

According to a statement, the new LNG-powered trucks will play an important role in reducing on-land emissions.

Compared to Heavy Duty Vehicles (HDV), LNG offers a reduction of 25% in CO2 emissions, meeting the proposed EU legislation of a 20% reduction in CO2 emissions from trucks by 2025.

Janne Ritakoski, Containerships’ Head of Land Operations, commented: “This capacity increase is an important step in our strategy to use LNG as main fuel source throughout the supply chain.

“The Port of Rotterdam is our main hub to and from mainland Europe. This makes the added LNG-fuelled truck capacity even more significant.”

“We strongly believe that LNG’s breakthrough is close, but the infrastructure is still premature. Our ability to use LNG on land operations depends highly on the refuelling infrastructure of the region.”
