A video published recently by Özgür Basın via YouTube shows forty-four 40ft shipping containers toppling into the Yangtze River at the Waigaoqiao Dock at the Port of Shanghai.
According to the Mirror, the incident was believed to be caused by the vessel losing balance while containers were being loaded ship.
Pan Jiefeng, a Spokesman from the Shanghai Maritime Safety Administration, said: “The water of the Yangtze was not contaminated, as the containers did not contain hazardous materials.”
Nobody was injured or killed in the incident.
The event highlights the issues present at ports globally and the measures that should be in place to ensure that containers do not cause disruptions in everyday operations.
