The Turkish flagged cargo vessel Murat Hacıbekiroğlu 2 sank in the Mediterranean Sea at 15:30 local time on Sunday September 19, 2016, according to Fleetmon.

After the Turkish MRCC (Search and Rescue) could not be reached the container ship Electra A, another Turkish flagged ship with a gross tonnage of over 30,000, came to the rescue.

The crew abandoned ship at around 15:00 local time and the 10 crew were rescued and were brought to Alanya on the Turkish coast.

It understood the vessel was transporting cargo to Aslan Çimento.

In late August, 2016, a similar cargo vessel sank off the coast of Oman, taking its cargo of 69 cars, food cargo, tyres and engine oil down with it.

The Bosphorus Strait that runs through Istanbul, Turkey was closed on August 17, 2016 after a collision between a bulk carrier and a coastguard vessel killed two people.
