CMA CGM, the world’s fourth-largest container shipping line by market share, has said it is uniting its Containerships and MacAndrews brands to recreate a key player in intra-European multimodal transport.

According to a statement, both companies will come under the single Containerships brand, and in doing so combine unique maritime and inland solutions with complementary regional footprints.

The carrier says the union will be able to unlock major synergies and concentrate its resources on commercial growth and on the development of high quality services for its customers.

The integration of the local agencies networks will also allow for the creation of a tailored intra-regional service, in line with what the carrier describes as its ‘Customer Centricity’ strategy.

PTI covered CMA CGM’s purchase of Finnish ocean carrier Containerships in November 2018. As well as being an attempt to improve CMA CGM’s European offering, the acquisition was also intended to boost the carrier’s eco-friendly efforts.

In December 2018, the first of a new fleet of LNG-powered vessels was delivered to Containerships, which is scheduled to be in operation in early 2019.

MacAndrews, bought by CMA CGM in 2002, offers a complete range of quality rail, road, and maritime transport services and is a specialist of container transport on Intra-European routes, specifically North and Central Europe, the Iberian Peninsula, the Canary Islands, and North Africa.

Speaking about the union of the two brands, Guillaume Lathelize, Senior Vice President – Short Sea Lines Med and North Europe, CMA CGM, said this: “With the combination of these two complementary brands recognized for their expertise, the CMA CGM Group reaffirms its strategy aimed at densifying its regional coverage and developing land and logistics services.

“We will thus be able to offer our customers tailored end-to-end solutions and better cater to their expectations and their needs.”
