The CMA CGM Group, the world’s fourth largest shipping group, has announced the delivery of the CMA CGM vasco de gama, its largest container ship to date, by the Chinese shipyard China State Shipbuilding Corporation.

This 18,000 TEU ship is 399 metres in length and 54 metres wide.

Calling at 11 different countries, the CMA CGM vasco de gama will be positioned on the French-Asia Line (FAL).

The FAL joins Europe to Asia. In a globalised economy, this gigantic vessel has the capacity to transport more than 181,000 tonnes of goods between European, Middle East and Asian markets.

The ship is equipped with the latest environmental technologies: an engine of the latest generation, a twisted leading edge rudder with bulb, and an optimised hull design.

Those ship-parts decrease its emissions by 10% compared to the previous vessel generation. With an estimated emission of 37g of CO2/km for each container, the CMA CGM VASCO DE GAMA is one of the greenest means of goods transport in the world.

The CMA CGM vasco de gama is the first 18,000 TEU containership ever built by a Chinese shipyard.

Fact File: CMA CGM, founded and led by Jacques R. Saadé is a worldwide leading shipping group. Its 468 vessels call more than 400 ports in the world, on all 5 continents. In 2014, they carried 12.2 million TEU.
