Leading ocean carrier CMA CGM has announced the launch of a Reefer Pharma division that will focus on the temperature-controlled transportation of pharmaceutical products.

The new solution, which guarantees the safety of goods and remains compliant with international quality standards, is the shipping company’s latest innovation in the reefer cargo segment, boosting a fleet of 385,000 refrigerated containers.

Safety procedures that will be implemented to protect goods include the introduction of new containers that prevent external contamination, mandated inspections of cargo before it exits the warehouse, and the limited handling of containers during transportation.

According to a statement, CMA CGM will also provide its customers with access to a team of experts, ensuring the constant monitoring of pharma cargo from the group’s head office in Marseille, as well as operational centres in Miami and Singapore.

Information and data generated by monitoring systems will be available in real-time, offering constant visibility of container conditions and technical configurations.

In addition to this, CMA CGM’s new service meets the European Union's Good Distribution Practice requirements, which regulate the monitoring and distribution chains of pharmaceutical products.

Mathieu Friedberg, Senior Vice President of Commercial Agencies Network CMA CGM, said: “By launching the CMA CGM Reefer Pharma Division, we are seeking to raise the standards of safety and care regarding the goods that our customers entrust to us.

“For us, it's a matter of responsibility and delivering on our promise to provide optimal, adapted solutions.”
