The CMA CGM Group has announced that it has entered into exclusive discussions with the STEF group to wholly acquire La Méridionale, a maritime company for mixed freight and passenger transport in Marseille.

The finalisation of this transaction is conditional on the signing of share transfer agreements and authorisations from the various competition authorities.

CMA CGM wishes to continue its development on the Mediterranean through this acquisition, while strengthening the position of the port of Marseille and the French maritime sector.

It intends to turn around and restore growth prospects to La Méridionale. It will do this by creating commercial complementarities in France and internationally, in particular on the RoRo service to Morocco, while preserving the employment of French seafarers on board its ships.

CMA CGM also wants to invest in the fleet of ships and the energy transition of La Méridionale.

La Méridionale, created in 1931, operates a daily freight and passenger transport service between Corsica and the mainland, as part of a public service delegation with up to 13 weekly crossings.

This announcement comes less than a week after CMA CGM announced that its new terminal investment in Alexandria Port, Egypt, is ready to accept its GETEX and WEMED services.
