China ports container volumes rise 7 per cent for 2021

The container throughput of Chinese ports was 282.7 million TEU in 2021, a year-on-year increase of 7 per cent.

In data released by the Ministry of Transport of the People’s Republic of China, Shanghai port topped the table in container throughput, reaching over 47.03 million TEU. That’s an 8.1 per cent increase compared to 2020 levels.

Second highest container throughput was the Port of Ningbo-Zhoushan, reaching 31.08 million TEU.

Beibu Gulf Port was the biggest riser in container throughput, enjoying increases of 19 per cent to just over 6 million TEU for 2021.

Only two major Chinese ports saw declines in throughput on the year.  Fallers included the Port of Dalian, seeing its throughput nosedive by 28.1 per cent to 3.67 million TEU. The Port of Yinkou also fell by 7.8 per cent to 5.21 million TEU.
