The US Coast Guard (USCG) has reopened the Ports of Charleston and Virginia after Hurricane Florence forced them to close.
In a customer advisory, the South Carolina Ports Authority has confirmed the Port of Charleston’s container terminal will open fully at 4 am local time September 17 2018, along with the intermodal rail and the Port Greer Inland Port.
However, not all the facilities have escaped delays to reopening as the North Carolina State Ports Authority has reported that the ports of Wilmington and Morehead City will remain closed until September 19 2018.
Speaking about the recovery following Hurricane Florence, Captain Kevin Carrol of the USCG, commented: “Our number one priority is saving lives and preventing life-endangering activities on our waterways.

“After that, restoring the free-flow of vessel traffic is a top priority, and we realize that our port and personnel could be critical in assisting areas that were more heavily impacted by the storm.”
Captain John Reed, Sector Charleston Commander, of the USCG, said: “The Coast Guard in South Carolina is committed to a swift recovery from the storm with search and rescue operations and safety of life as our ongoing priority.
“Our next priority is to resume the flow of maritime commerce stability through the ports of South Carolina.”
