Cargo vessel sinks off Port of Odessa after explosion

An Estonian cargo ship has sunk off the Ukrainian Port of Odessa after an explosion.

News agency Reuters has reported that the Estonian-owned Helt sunk on Thursday, according to the vessel’s Managing Director at Vista Shipping Agency.

The 2,100 dwt Panama-flagged cargo ship was believed to have struck a mine, with the whereabouts of crew currently unknown.

Ukrainian ports closed last week following the Russian military invasion.

UK Transport Secretary Grant Shapps has written to all UK ports requestion suspension of access to Russian vessels.
