The Port of Melbourne recorded a 9.3 per cent year-on-year increase in container throughput in March 2026, handling 297,000 TEUs.
Full container imports (excluding Bass Strait traffic) reached 118,000 TEUs, up 17.8 per cent compared with the same period last year, reflecting firmer inbound demand across key consumer and industrial cargo segments.
Full container exports totalled 64,000 TEUs, indicating comparatively stable outbound flows following earlier volatility in trade conditions.

The overall uplift suggests a gradual recovery in containerised trade activity, supported by sustained import demand and improved supply chain consistency across major cargo categories.
In non-containerised cargo, total trade reached 2.05 million revenue tonnes, marking a 9.9 per cent year-on-year increase for March 2026, signalling stronger performance across bulk and breakbulk segments alongside container growth.
