Port Houston surpassed the 3 million TEU milestone in September, handling 3.27 million TEUs year-to-date (YTD), the fastest pace in the port’s history.
Total container volumes are up 5 per cent compared to the same period last year.
Charlie Jenkins, CEO of Port Houston, said: “3 million TEUs and counting; this is the earliest we’ve ever reached that mark. Every container moved represents partnership, collaboration, and trust across the global supply chain, and we’re proud to see that reflected in Port Houston’s continued growth.”
In September alone, the port handled 337,659 TEUs, a 2 per cent increase year-on-year (YoY). Loaded exports rose 13 per cent for the month and 7 per cent YTD, driven by strong demand for Houston’s resin and manufactured goods.
Loaded imports softened slightly for the month but remain up 3 per cent YTD. While a more measured pace is expected through the fourth quarter, overall performance remains steady and positioned for a solid year-end.

Steel imports fell 56 per cent in September but are nearly flat YTD. General cargo rose 1 per cent, while total tonnage across Port Houston’s public terminals reached 41.59 million short tonnes through September — up 5 per cent YoY.
In September, Port Houston representatives participated in the PromPerú Ports & Trade Seminar, highlighting how the port’s infrastructure supports Peruvian imports, particularly fresh fruit and perishables.
Reefer imports increased 19 per cent YTD through August, largely driven by growing trade with Latin America.

Despite the rise in refrigerated cargo, energy-related exports remain the port’s largest segment, supported by the region’s strong petrochemical base.
Jenkins added: “Our regional economy thrives thanks to a strong foothold in energy cargo and commercial trade.
“As the city expands its clean energy workforce, Port Houston remains committed to being a strategic leader for the Houston Ship Channel, the nation’s No. 1 maritime gateway for commerce.”
Recently, Port Houston completed its portion of the Houston Ship Channel Expansion Project 11.
