Flinders Port Holdings (FPH) has signed a contract with Austrian crane manufacturer Kuenz for the delivery of a cantilever automated rubber-tyred gantry (ARTG) crane.
This move advances FPH’s transition towards automation at Flinders Adelaide Container Terminal (FACT).
The cantilever ARTG will underpin a Proof-of-Concept testing programme within the GatewaySA Program of Works, a more than $300 million investment to modernise FACT.
Developed over more than a year in close collaboration between GatewaySA and Künz, the purpose-designed ARTG has been tailored to FACT’s specific requirements.
The crane introduces a cantilever configuration that physically separates truck operations from container stacking, eliminating interaction between vehicles and the crane structure.
Trucks operate beneath the cantilever, while containers are stacked between the crane posts—removing the need for vehicles to cross the travelling beam and significantly improving safety and operational efficiency.
FPH CEO, Stewart Lammin, said: “The signing of this contract brings us another step closer to future proofing FACT, while supporting the needs of our customers and the South Australian economy well into the future.”

The cantilever RTG builds on proven side-loaded RTG concepts while enabling automated handling for both truck and stacking operations.
Kuenz Managing Director, David Moosbrugger, stated: “The delivery of the first cantilever RTG crane for the Australian market is of great significance to us.
“We are convinced that our concept and its associated benefits are specifically tailored to the requirements of the Australian and other port markets. At the same time, this project marks the successful entry of Künz into Australian port operations.”
The PoC may support a future shift away from manual straddle carrier operations at FACT.
A dedicated ARTG block and testing area will be established to evaluate crane performance, safety systems and interfaces, positioning FPH to assess the viability of a new operating model with potential global relevance.
In September 2025, Kuenz expanded its presence in the Dutch market through a new agreement with long-term partner Combined Cargo Terminals (CCT).
