Cambodian Minister Pan Sorasak has requested, for a second time, the use of the Thailand’s Laem Chabang Port to export agricultural products to third countries, according to the Bangkok Post.

Laem Chabang is Thailand’s largest port and is situated north of Pattaya and faces the gulf of Thailand.

As Cambodia’s own ports do not have adequate capacity and Laem Chabang is able to handle mega ships, it would be of great financial and strategic value to Cambodia to utilise the port.

At present, only Japanese and Thai companies in Thailand have been allowed to use Laem Chabang.

Mey Kalyan, Senior Adviser to the Supreme National Economic Council in Cambodia, said: “Our Thai counterparts are the ones who will decide whether to open up to Cambodia or not. It is for the benefit of each country, if we could connect to the Thai port it would be great and we can export our products at a cheaper cost.”
