The Beaufort Inlet Channel was closed on Thursday November 17, 2016 after a bulk carrier ran aground.

The carrier, later named as Pola Palekh, was on its way to Morehead City, North Carolina when it ran aground in the buoy 16A area after the engine failed.

There was no damage to the vessel or fuel leaks reported, but the crew were unable to refloat the ship by themselves, and required assistance from tugs.

The Pola Palekh was holding 35,800 tonnes of fertilizer when it ran aground, but was successfully salvaged and offloaded its cargo at Morehead City.

Earlier this year, CMA CGM’s mega containership Vasco De Gama ran aground off the Port of Southampton, the ship was then docked in Southampton after being aground for 30 minutes, and damages are being assessed.
