Imports and exports have been suspended at the ports of New York and New Jersey due to a blizzard.
According to NewJersey.com, the blizzard threatens to halt the movement of people and goods on land, air and sea.
There have already been warnings that highways and transit systems may be closed.
A spokeswoman for the New York Shipping Association Beverly Fedorko said it was unlikely that the terminal closures would have a noticeable impact on the availability of consumer goods.
The New York and New Jersey Port Authority said storage fees ordinarily charged when containers remain on the docks would be waived while the closures were in effect.
The Port Authority said a decision would be made Tuesday afternoon on whether terminals would remain closed on Wednesday, with reopening depending on the length and severity of the storm.
