CMA CGM’s 18,000 TEU Benjamin Franklin – the largest cargo ship to visit the US – has recently arrived in Seattle to a reception, as the Port of Seattle steals a march on its competition and becomes the next major US port to handle the mega-ship.

Seattle recently made an alliance – the Northwest Seaport Alliance – with historic rival the Port of Tacoma, and the visit of Benjamin Franklin shows the alliance is prepared for the mega-ship era.

It is a timely visit for Seattle and Tacoma in an age where the alliance faces competition not just from the southerly ports on the US West Coast, but also from Canada and US Gulf and East Coast ports that are awaiting the completion of the expanded Panama Canal.
