OAO Belaruskali, one of the world’s largest manufacturers of potash fertilizers, has acquired a 30 percent stake in the Klaipeda bulk terminal, according to Belarus Prime Minister Mikhail Myasnikovich.
Speaking to reporters, Myasnikovich said that the state-owned firm will pay as much as $30 million for the share acquisition, which represents the country’s first investment in the Lithuanian port. Myasnikovich added that the country is also considering further investment in the port through its petrochemical enterprise, Grodno Azot.
The Belarusian PM added that the Baltic state is in the process of implementing an ambitious logistics program to help manage cargo flows between Belarus and its neighbouring countries, with Lithuania, and more importantly Klaipeda, a core area of focus.
