  • Year-long project sees Berth 14 transformed into new container handling facility

An inauguration ceremony was held in Basra Port this week to celebrate the opening of its new container terminal.

The opening marked the end of a year-long modernisation project at the port, known locally as Al Maqal Port, which involved the transformation of Berth 14 to handle containers.

Nawah Port Management (NPM), who will manage the new terminal in partnership with the General Company for Ports of Iraq, has purchased a new mobile harbour crane and reachstacker from Liebherr and reconstructed the quay at Berth 14, whilst adding both general cargo and container yards adjacent to the new facility.

“Offering container cargo handling less than 50 miles from three of the largest oil fields in Iraq is a strategic differentiator that NAWAH Port Management brings to bear,” Tom Pritzker, chairman and co-founder of Nawah, told Construction Weekly.

“As an efficient, consistent, and reliable container terminal operator, NAWAH is making a long term commitment to Basra as it emerges as one of the fastest growing cities in the Gulf.”
