Basra Gateway Terminal (BGT), an operation of International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI) in the Port of Umm Qasr, has welcomed the first direct freight service between the UAE and Iraq.
The service, operated by DP World, connects Dubai’s Jebel Ali to Umm Qasr and possibly all of Iraq with quick, efficient, and safe roll-on, roll-off (Ro-Ro) cargoes.

In comparison to the customary 14-day period for cross-border road transit between the two nations, the service provides a significantly reduced alternative travel time of only 36 hours from the Port of Jebel Ali to the Port of Umm Qasr.
From the Port of Jebel Ali, the trailers are loaded on to the vessel and discharged at the Port of Umm Qasr, where a local truck transports it directly to the end destination.

According to DP World, the service’s launch contributes to Iraq’s rapidly increasing economy by providing a more efficient commerce route than export and import goods travelling through neighbouring nations.
In May, BGT handled 4 million TEU after nine years of operation in the country’s busiest port.
