The Container Terminal Automation Conference (CTAC) Americas 2026 is just around the corner, and we’re pleased to spotlight some of the expert speakers who will be sharing their insights on the future of container terminal automation and digitalisation across the Americas.
Today, we speak with Javier Krasowski, Dock Manager – Operations Department at Katoen Natie, about how Latin American ports and terminals are advancing automation and digitalisation over the next 12–24 months, and why strategic technology deployment, skilled people and collaboration across the port community will be key to delivering resilient and high-quality operations.
Join us on 24-25 February 2026 in Panama and be part of the conversation shaping the next phase of terminal performance in the region! Register here: https://events.porttechnology.org/ctac-americas/#Tickets
What do you see as the biggest opportunity for Latin American ports and terminals in the next 12–24 months, particularly around automation and digitalisation?
Port operators in Latin America are increasing their efforts by investing in automation, expansion, and digitalisation. While these changes are still at an early stage on the east coast of South America, Terminal Cuenca del Plata/Katoen Natie in Montevideo, Uruguay, stands out as a leading example in the region.
The terminal shows strong commitment through expansion projects, deeper draft, modern equipment, and advanced software. This progress is supported by a strong people-focused culture, with skilled and dedicated local professionals.
Together, these elements drive growth and ensure reliable operations in the fast-moving and increasingly complex container terminal industry.
Which innovation or technology trend do you believe will have the most impact on operational resilience and efficiency in container terminals?
Innovation and technology should be used strategically to achieve key goals. When applied at the right time and place, they can improve terminal operations and service quality.
Technology should add real value and not be used by default. Before introducing new tools, terminals must review and update procedures, taking into account local rules, operating conditions, and outdated practices. AI can be especially useful for data analysis, forecasting, and improving reliability for port operators, shipping lines, and all industry stakeholders.
What key message or insight are you most looking forward to sharing with the CTAC Americas 2026 audience during your session?
I believe that innovation and new technologies must be widely embraced to deliver services with excellence, efficiency and the highest quality in an increasingly dynamic and complex industry. They are also essential to achieving environmental and sustainability goals.
In an industry where change and challenges are constant, progress depends on the commitment of outstanding professionals, where know-how is key, as well as on the collaboration of local shareholders and stakeholders and, above all, the engagement of entire port communities, government agencies, cities and their people.
With a shared vision, mutual understanding and strong commitment, the changes ahead will create lasting value, drive sustainable growth and benefit everyone. It’s time to move forward.

With more than 18 years of wide and strong experience in the maritime industry, Javier Krasowski mainly focuses on port and vessel operations, bringing a deep and robust understanding of the field. His background spans a comprehensive knowledge of industry standards, regulations and best practices, coupled with practical know-how that enhances operational efficiency and customer service experience.
