Today, we sit down with Norbert Klettner, Vice President of TIC 4.0. Norbert has been working for more than 15 years in the port and terminal industry, implementing and integrating TOS, initially for the terminal operator EUROGATE, and for several years as the managing director of the RBS EMEA Office, implementing the TOPS Expert system. With akquinet port consulting as well, he has moved into the area of using data for simulation and emulation purposes on the CHESSCON suite. Norbert has been a founding member of TIC 4.0 since 2018 and is the Vice President of TIC 4.0, as well as a member of the Executive and Operations Councils of TIC 4.0.

What are you most looking forward to at CTAC Europe this year?
I am looking forward to networking and exchanges on innovation and developments in our industry. Of course, meeting all the fellow TIC 4.0 members and getting an update on the technologies and projects done in the terminal industry. Particularly interested in the honest status of where the industry stands today.
What does good automation look like in a terminal today?
Probably a terminal that delivers continuous, reliable, and safe operations, which is not necessarily the most high-performing, but the most reliable in day-to-day operation.
What are the main challenges when putting new technology into operation?
The main challenge is change management for organisations, processes, and people. Besides that, there are certainly also technical challenges, but they are usually manageable today when putting new technology into operation.
Which technologies do you think will shape terminals in the next five years?
Data-driven initiatives around AI, together with autonomous equipment. This will pave the way towards full autonomous operation in the next 10 to 15 years.
