Today, we sit down with Gerhard L. Fischer, Head of Sales at Siemens AG. Gerhard joined Siemens in 1990 to develop high-frequency and large-power converters. In 1995, he changed to sales/marketing of variable speed drives, followed in 1996 by a posting in Siemens´ Centre of Competence in Singapore and Taiwan, developing the cranes business. From 2005 to 2008, he worked with Siemens in The Hague, Netherlands, in a business development function for harbour cranes.

What are you most looking forward to at CTAC Europe this year?
At CTAC Europe this year, I am most looking forward to meeting key players in terminal automation from the end-user, crane builder, and equipment supplier sides.
What does good automation look like in a terminal today?
Good automation in a terminal today means a straightforward and clearly structured automation architecture, with open interfaces that allow free data exchange between the different sections of the terminal.
What are the main challenges when putting new technology into operation?
The main challenge when putting new technology into operation is that end users want to see field-tested concepts. New ideas therefore need to find parties that are willing to carry out pilot testing.
Which technologies do you think will shape terminals in the next five years?
The technology most likely to shape terminals in the next five years is autonomously driven horizontal transport.
