CMA CGM-owned carrier APL has announced that it is providing free shipping services to The Ocean Cleanup, a project which is developing advanced technologies for removing plastic from the world’s oceans.

By becoming an official partner to the non-government organization, APL has agreed to transport containers of components and equipment for the extraction of plastics until 2020.

The Ocean Cleanup performs global measurement campaigns to determine the sources and composition of floating plastic in the oceans, allowing the pollutants to be eliminated more quickly.

According to a statement, the components carried by APL will also support global research programmes targeting the removal of plastics.

Dennis Yee, APL Global Head of Safety, Security and Environment, commented: “We applaud The Ocean Cleanup’s course in cleaning up our oceans. In partnering with The Ocean Cleanup, APL seeks to step up our efforts in protecting marine biodiversity.

“APL is fully behind The Ocean Cleanup’s efforts to remove ocean debris that contributes to habitat destruction and kills tens of thousands of marine animals each year.”

In addition to providing free support to The Ocean Cleanup, the carrier makes an effort to protect the marine environment from the transfer of harmful aquatic organisms in ballast water.

APL employees are also involved in coastal and waterway clean-up for litter-free seas and rivers, further reinforcing the company’s commitment to marine conservation.
