Realtime Business Solutions (RBS) has deployed its next-generation Automatic Vessel Planning (AVP) module at Klaipėdos Smeltė Container Terminal.
AVP version 2, part of RBS TOPS Expert, uses artificial intelligence (AI) to eliminate traditional inefficiencies such as quay crane idle time, excessive re-stows, and yard congestion.
By predicting workloads and synchronising container availability with real-time yard readiness, each container is picked once and moved with minimal interference, boosting productivity.
According to RBS, early results at Klaipėdos Smeltė are striking. Planning time for a 3,000-container vessel, previously around 10 hours, now takes just 20 seconds, with only minutes needed for validation.
Workforce efficiency has more than doubled, with a single planner managing multiple vessels while maintaining higher-quality planning.

The terminal reports measurable gains including quay crane productivity exceeding 30 moves per hour, a reduction in re-handles, shorter vessel berth times, and smoother yard operations.
Tadeus Nechviadovic, Head of Planning at Klaipėdos Smeltė, said: “Yesterday we tested the AVP, and the guys really like that 3,000 containers could be planned within 2 minutes. They are really impressed with the functionalities that RBS can provide and everything so far so good.”
AVP also reduces skill dependency, enables scenario simulation, balances crane workloads, and optimises vessel stowage, allowing junior planners to produce high-quality plans and terminals to maintain consistent, predictable operations.
By cutting planning time, lowering crane idle time, and improving yard harmony, AVP is helping Klaipėdos Smeltė operate more efficiently and cost-effectively.
