Aftermath of APL Austria Blaze

Work to salvage the last batch of 32 containers from the fire ravaged APL Austria container ship currently docked at the port of Ngqurha began on yesterday morning (February 15, 2017) after it was forced to dock when a fire started on board, reported the South African Maritime Authority (SAMSA).

According to SAMSA, fires in APL Austria’s lower hold vessel have been extinguished except for two containers in the cargo holding area that had been packed with candles and have melted into wax.

This was despite the cargo hold being filled with water to the height of four containers as result of firefighting efforts that began on board the vessel on February 12, 2017, seen in the video below:

 

 

SAMSA has reported that as many as 281 containers had been removed from the vessel. Firefighters are still on standby. View more images of the aftermath below:
