A railway marshalling yard at the Port of Rotterdam has selected LED floodlight solutions provider AAA-LUX to install a remote lighting solution with low-maintenance.
Commenting on the yard’s requirements, Tei Ickenroth of consulting company Infra Engineering BV, said: “Safety and economic reliance aspects were essential elements in the selection of the illumination solution.
“Safety, because train drivers arriving at the yard approach a well-illuminated area coming from the dark. They don’t want glare, but want to be able to see what is happening immediately and as the yard has to be closed down completely for safety reasons each time maintenance crews have to visit the yard, management also wanted floodlights that require as little maintenance as possible.”
Ikenroth goes on to say that the complete installation communicates wirelessly with a central processing unit: “The maintenance crew can adjust illumination levels and instruct the various luminaires from a computer in the central control tower.
“And the maintenance crew no longer needs to have specialised vehicles and equipment on standby to conduct their maintenance operations. More importantly, in the past it could take up to three months before permission was granted to enter the yard.
“During that time illumination levels at the yard would below par. As maintenance can now be done immediately, we achieve a saving in time of up to 50%.”
