Victoria International Container Terminal (VICT) recently celebrated the completion of its new terminal in Webb Dock in Melbourne, Australia ahead of schedule.

The Webb Dock East located VICT has become the third terminal operator at the Port of Melbourne. The Port of Melbourne is the largest container and general cargo port in Australia with a capacity of 2.5 million TEUs. This terminal additon will add one berth of 330 meters, fitted with three Neo-Panamax robotic ship-to-shore (STS) cranes, 23.7 hectares of yard and off-dock area with fully automated operations from the gate to the quayside. With this new operation, the port is looking to deliver an estimated capacity of 350,000 standard containers.

The celebration was headed by Enrique K. Razon Jr., International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI) Chairman and President, along with His Honor Luke Donnellan, Victoria State Minister of Ports; Councillor Bernadene Voss, Port Phillip City Mayor; and Brendan Bourke, Port of Melbourne CEO.

Commenting on the early opening, Mr. Razon said, “This is an achievement that everyone who has helped build the terminal and are invested in the success of the State of Victoria should celebrate”. Mr. Razon went on to say, “Once we start operations in January, VICT will be the most technologically advanced container terminal in the world”.

The invited guests also toured the terminal to inspect the five Neo-Panamax quay cranes, which arrived earlier this year. Working almost fully automated in combination with other world-class automated port equipment, the state-of-the-art cranes will greatly improve stevedoring operations at the terminal, resulting in unparalleled efficiencies and safer work condition since there will be less need for human interface at key terminal locations.

ICTSI’s portfolio of terminals and projects spans developed and emerging market economies in the Asia Pacific, the Americas, and Europe, Middle East and Africa. This completion of this new project reflects ICTI’s commitment to constantly push the boundaries of innovation in port operations.

In 2014, VICT signed a 26-year concession with the Port of Melbourne Corporation to build, operate and expand the container terminal at Webb Dock East. VICT believe their development will deliver a leading global standard in modern container terminal design, innovation and operations, and will become the flagship facility in Australia’s premier port.

The first phase of terminal operations is expected to commence by the start of 2017.

Port Technology recently reported the opening of a USD $500 million ICTSI teminal in Colombia.
