Like container terminals, container port projects are an important feat for any operator, as they provide the infrastructure necessary to handle the millions of containers that pass into bustling economies each year.

In the top three port projects listed below, PTI gives you a round-up of some key expansion plans that are planned for the future.

The top three container port projects are:

  1. Tanzania Trade Hub

Tanzania is planning to spend US$10 billion on a new port and special economic zone. The reasoning behind the project is to enable the Tanzanian government to realise an industrial revolution in the country. Currently, there is no definitive completion date, although it has been stated that it could take as long as 10 years.

  1. Tema Port, Ghana

APM Terminals has announced recently that it is involved in a joint-venture with Bollore Africa Logistics and the Ghana Ports and Harbour Authority for the construction of a $1.5 billion port in Tema, Ghana, which will have a total capacity of 3.5 million TEU. The project consists of an upgrade to the existing road network, as well as a new greenfield port at the Tema Port site.

  1. Tianjin Port

DP World has been active in projects around the globe, although one of key note is the massive Chinese port project that was recently covered by PTI. As part of a $1.9 billion plan, DP World will invest $1.2 billion to build a new port in Tianjin. The port will have an annual capacity of 1.2 million TEU and have reduced carbon emissions.
