22 crewmembers have been rescued from a cargo ship which ran aground on Wednesday February 11, 2015 on the island of Andros in the Aegean Sea.

According to gCaptain, 18 were airlifted to safety from the ‘Goodfaith’ cargo ship by a Greek Air Force helicopter, while the remaining four were able to climb ashore with the help of local firefighters.

The ship was sailing empty from the Port of Elefsina – close to Athens – to Odessa, Ukraine and was driven ashore off the island of Andros before sending a distress signal.

11 of the 22 crew members were rescued by helicopter while the rest were still aboard the freighter, according to Reuters.

Three tug ships were also on hand to assist the rescue efforts.
