Mario Cordero, CEO of the Port of Long Beach, has announced plans to retire at the end of 2025.
His departure will conclude a career spanning over four decades in public service, maritime policy, and law.
Cordero has served as CEO since 2017, overseeing the port during a period of cargo growth, infrastructure expansion, and operational challenges related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Prior to this role, he spent seven years at the Federal Maritime Commission—including four as Chair—and eight years as a member of the Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners.
During his time on the Harbor Commission, Cordero introduced the Green Port Policy, adopted in 2005, which marked a shift in the port’s environmental approach.

His tenure as CEO coincides with the port’s ongoing efforts to reduce emissions while expanding trade volumes.
The port reports that Cordero’s final year aligns with a broader recognition of two decades of environmental initiatives.
Under his leadership, the port continued to pursue zero-emissions operations and infrastructure upgrades, including clean energy and terminal modernisation projects.
Before entering port administration, Cordero practiced law for more than 30 years and taught political science at Long Beach City College.
The Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners will outline a process to appoint a successor in the coming months.
