Construction at Lumsden Point, within the Port of Port Hedland, is moving forward as a key piece of Western Australia’s infrastructure strategy.
Designed to bolster the region’s export and import capacity, the multi-phase development will soon see over 280 steel piles laid as a foundation for two state-of-the-art multi-user wharves.
These facilities will be pivotal for the handling and export of battery minerals, alongside supporting imports of equipment crucial to renewable energy projects.
The recent award of the Landside Civils and Services contract to Ertech Pty Ltd marks another step towards completion. Ertech’s remit covers a full suite of earthworks, development of operational roads, sealing the causeway, and the installation of vital underground utilities ranging from power and water to telecoms — all essentials for a modern port environment.

The Lumsden Point project is expected to stimulate significant economic activity and facilitate direct shipping services to the Pilbara. Hundreds of jobs are anticipated as trades and logistics expand, enhancing both local employment and broader supply chain resilience.
First imports are on track to commence from mid-2026, supporting downstream industries and the growing demand for energy transition technologies.
Financially, this major upgrade has attracted Australian Government backing totalling AUS565 million ($366.7 million), including AUS450 million ($292 million) earmarked for Lumsden Point itself as part of the broader Pilbara Ports Capacity Upgrade Programme.
The Western Australian Government has supplemented this with a commitment of AUS96.6 million ($62.7 million), demonstrating a shared priority to improve logistics capabilities and future-proof regional exports.
