Liebherr has secured an order for seven ship-to-shore (STS) gantry cranes from Tradepoint Atlantic / TiL Terminal LLC for the Sparrows Point Container Terminal (SPCT) in Baltimore, US.
The terminal is being developed by Tradepoint Atlantic in partnership with Terminal Investment Limited (TiL) at the Port of Baltimore. The 168-acre development forms part of the redevelopment of the former Bethlehem Steel site into a logistics hub.
According to the announcement, the project is expected to increase the Port of Baltimore’s container handling capacity by approximately 70 per cent.
The seven Liebherr STS cranes will support terminal operations and are designed to handle ultra-large container vessels. The terminal is planned to accommodate two vessels at the same time.
The cranes will feature a 70-metre outreach, 25-metre backreach and a lift height over rail of 51 metres. Liebherr said the configuration will allow the cranes to serve the widest container vessels currently in operation, while also supporting larger vessel sizes in future.
The equipment will also include control systems and digital architectures intended to support secure and reliable terminal operations.

Liebherr said the latest order brings the total number of STS cranes ordered for the US market since 2020 to 27.
The Sparrows Point development is described as one of the largest privately financed container terminal projects in the US, with approximately $1.2 billion invested in its development.
