Europa Terminal in Antwerp boosted its capacity on 24 February 2026 with the arrival of five new Ship-to-Shore (STS) cranes, advancing the port’s modernisation.
The cranes not only signal progress on the ground but also represent a long-term investment in port operations.
The cranes increase operational capacity and are designed to handle the largest container ships safely and efficiently.
After installation, they reach 52 metres in height with an overwater reach of 71.8 metres, allowing for vessels up to 26 containers wide.
A maximum lifting capacity of 112 tonnes supports faster ship handling and accommodates continued growth in container traffic.

Equipped with advanced safety and operational technologies, including anti-slip systems, remote diagnostics, precise controls, integrated digital monitoring, and ergonomically designed cabs, the cranes also feature VR training environments to enhance skill development and operational safety.
Their technology and sustainability specifications contribute to a modern, future-oriented port infrastructure.
The modernisation project is being delivered by Artes Group, Boskalis, Herbosch-Kiere, PSA Antwerp and the Port of Antwerp-Bruges.
It involves a comprehensive transformation of the terminal and quay wall, scheduled over three phases across 10 years.

The first phase, accelerated by the arrival of the new cranes, involves deepening the first 500 m of quay to accommodate ships with draughts of up to 16 metres. Two additional phases will extend and renovate the remaining quay sections.
Alongside structural upgrades, the renovation supports a transition to a climate-neutral port, including the installation of a shore power system that allows vessels to switch off engines and connect to on-shore electricity, reducing CO2 emissions and improving air quality.
