Varex Imaging

Varex Imaging addresses many types of threats by providing cargo screening system manufacturers and others with products for high-energy X-ray imaging. Varex Imaging specialized linear accelerators are at the heart of cargo screening operations in some of the world’s major ports. Weapons — as well as stowaways, illegal drugs, and other contraband — are often detected in containers scanned by authorities using Varex Imaging equipped systems.

Linatron M™

The Linatron M product family represents the most popular X-ray accelerators available for the security and NDT markets. These accelerators are available in several versions that vary by output energy and shielding, as well as other customer specific features.

Linatron Mi

The Linatron Mi is a dual energy Linatron system that is specially designed to switch energy pulse by pulse. This feature is primarily intended for x-ray container screening applications in the security market, where alternating energies allow enhanced material discrimination and the potential for automatic identification of contraband materials. The Linatron Mi is currently available in two versions:

Linatron K15

The Linatron K-15 is the ultimate high-energy accelerator for NDT and inspection. With outputs configurable up to 15 MeV, it will penetrate the largest castings and solid parts. At full output, dose rates can be configured for well over 12,000 rads/min-m. The K-15 is mountable on a fixed surface or yoke. The trunion mounting feature allows the K-15 to be operated at a variety of orientations to make large object inspection much easier.

Dr. W Reed, Varian Medical Systems, USA X-ray inspection systems for cargo containers have now become a standard feature in many ports. This rapid adoption has been accelerated by the needs of port security, but made practical by the systems’ unique ability to non-destructively penetrate entire containers and generate images of the contents in just a few seconds. Even at this large scale, the resulting images are comparable to those obtained through traditional baggage scanning at airports and capable of identifying objects smaller than a baseball. Consequently, these systems are commonly employed for manifest verification and contraband interdiction in a variety of environments. In a prior article (see Port Technology 35), I reviewed the component technologies that contribute most to X-ray image quality in cargo screening systems.
