A Tanzania-registered containership, GOLDEN STAR 1, sank around 6 kilometres off Batam on 5 June at approximately 22:30 Singapore time after reportedly taking on water.
All nine crew members were rescued safely by Indonesian authorities following the incident.
The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) has issued navigational broadcasts advising vessels transiting the area to exercise caution and report any containers seen adrift.
Despite the sinking, vessel traffic through the Straits of Malacca and Singapore remains unaffected, according to the MPA.
There have also been no reports of oil pollution in Singapore waters. The MPA said it has informed Indonesian authorities and continues to monitor the situation.
The incident comes months after another vessel loss earlier this year, after the MPA was informed on 23 January 2026 that the Singapore-registered bulk carrier Devon Bay had sunk in the South China Sea while en route to Yangjiang, China.
